My Quarter Life Crisis is a Nagging Biatch

Lately, I’ve been consumed with thoughts of change.  It all started innocently enough.  Passing thoughts of changing my appereance or learning something new.

Dye your hair strawberry blonde. Get a tattoo. Pierce something.

It’s not unusual for me to think about change but lately the thoughts have been growing louder and more persistant.

Start running.  Learn to make jewelry.
Figure out what you want to do with your life.

And I can’t seem to drown them out as hard as I try.

Take a big risk. Pack up your life and move across country.  Do something that scares you.  Just take a risk.

It’s not that these thoughts are bad to think about.  But when they start screaming all at once, my chest gets tight and its hard to breathe.

Go back to school.  Get a new job.  Leave this one you don’t even like.  What exactly are you doing?

I guess life has been pretty stagnant for awhile.  I’m sort of stuck in a bubble of safety living at home, hanging out with my best friends from high school, all still living here in my hometown.  Not having to really step outside my comfort zone for two years now.  Just moving along.. going with the flow… standing still when I should be moving forward.

How about you start dating again?  Take a chance with that.

Or maybe, move away even if everyone else is staying.

Update your resume.  Send it out.  Look in all different places.  You’ll never leave without a reason.

And these thoughts, they just don’t stop.  I can’t make them stop.

Hi, this is your quarter life crisis talking and I’m here to stay.

  1. This is so dead on! I’ve just started ignoring the myriad voices telling me to do any number of different, often contradictory things, and started focusing instead on a few doable things. I’m going to beat you yet, quarter life crisis!

I was missing your posts! I’m glad you’re back. I couldn’t agree with u more! I’m turning 25 in july and I feel like such a disappointment. Are you thinking about indulging any of these thoughts? Doing something risky sounds excellent! I’ll do it with you 🙂

  3. So that’s what a quarter life crisis is!

I’m going through the exact same thing, mostly because i just got out of a long term relationship. i hear change is good, so just go for it while you can! you don’t want to think about what you *could* have done at this age when you’re older.

  5. Welcome. I’ve been dealing with this for almost three years now. It’s a bitch, but I hear we’re all better off when we come out the other end 🙂

  6. I can so identify! Well to start running would definitely be nothing but a benefit. Start small?

  7. I have these thoughts on a daily basis.

So, I’m going to give this law school thing a try. We’ll see.

  8. I’m having trouble with all the breaking down from seeing I havent achieved anything great enough in my life and not to burst the bubble yet.

Soon, soon. This will pass, right?

  9. I went through a quarter life crisis too, it’s normal. And maybe you should try to mix it up a little bit to help you feel like you’re doing something different. Nothing wrong with some change.

  10. Oh gosh…quarter life crisis… Well… Maybe try to do a little of what you want to do. Make a list of things you want to achieve or do for this month. And basically start from there. =)

  11. We all need a change every now and again. A little kick in the butt to get us moving…

  12. When I feel like this I do one of the things that my mind is suggesting I do.

So maybe start small with the hair color situation.

And then work your way up to the updating resume, sending it out and etc.

I still have thoughts like this. Daily, probably. I know how you feel. And I don’t quite know what to do to make it go away.

  13. This is good! I mean, crisis part aside, it’s healthy to be forward-thinking, to want something more than the status quo. Most of the things you’re yearning for are totally within your grasp, so why not do it?
Believe me, I can totally relate to how you’re feeling. Just today, I put a life list up on my blog (http://www.girlandcity.com/about/life-list/) and felt a little overwhelmed, but what I tell myself is to take small steps. Every item I check off will make me feel leaps and bounds closer to the person I want to be when I’m 25, 30, and beyond.

  14. The only way to make this quaterlife crisis disappear is actually to LIVE. There’s no other solution. Try to put yourself out of your comfort zone, set goals, make new experiences… Why not going abroad for a while this summer or take a year off? That’s when you learn the most.
What I know about this little voice is that sometimes you should listen to it because it means you’re no comfortable where you are now, but sometimes just try to tell this voice to shut up because there’s a lot of toxic thoughts in it …

Good luck with that !! And remember, you’re not alone ! And i know so many 20something who would love to talk with you about that because they feel the same way 🙂
